PHOTO: A tunnel about 3 feet wide, 3 feet high and about 100 yards long, is seen under a neighborhood in Mexicali, on Mexico's northern border with the U.S. The Policia Estatal Preventiva-state police in Mexicali arrested eight men Monday afternoon in a corner home located on 134 Callejon Madero, just two blocks south of the international border fence. Police say the men were digging a tunnel that was headed towards Calexico, California. Currently, all are being detained at a local police department to determine what charges they will face. State Police say at about 2 p.m. a concerned citizen called police and said there was suspicious activity at the corner home. Minutes later, police moved in to find several people digging a tunnel, which was headed north to the United States. The Director of the Policia Estatal Preventiva, Juan Manuel Guillen delivered a brief press conference the same day the tunnel was found. "We discovered a tunnel, its diameter is one meter and a half, it is 6 meters in depth, it measures 120 meters from the home to its end point. The tunnel was 60 meters away from the border. We also found the tunnel had light, an elevator and it is equipped with an air conditioner," says Guillen. Police searched the home and found a 38 special revolver, digging tools and an F-350 truck. The men in custody are from 27 to 52 years of age; police says the men are either from the Sinaloa or Guadalajara. A near by neighbor says his family once owned the home, but was sold through a real estate business several months ago. "My conscious is clear...but it's worry some that my children have to see this, when the property was sold we never knew who the owner was and we never saw people living in the house," says Gilberto Llorenz. Police say the property is registered to Carlos Silva Lepe, it is unknown at this time if police have contacted him. In the meantime, military officers stand guard in front of the home while neighbors wonder how this happened in their neighborhood. The P.G.R.- Procuraduría General de la República, which is the Mexican Federal Police, is investigating the case. Those arrested will remain in custody
