The Register Citizen

BANTAM, CONNECTICUT

A Torrington man accused of beating up his grandmother and attempting to set fire to her car was ordered held on $25,000 bond Wednesday.

John E. Bredickas, 26, of 90 Pershing St., pleaded not guilty to second-degree breach of peace, third-degree assault on an elderly victim, interfering with an emergency call, attempt to commit third-degree arson and third-degree criminal mischief.

"You are a danger to yourself and others," Bantam Superior Court Judge Charles D. Gill said, looking sternly at Bredickas. "When someone starts punching 83-year-old grandmothers around, you got to think something is wrong with you."

The 5-foot, 160-pound Bredickas was arrested by Torrington police at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at his home that he shares with his grandmother and two more of her grandsons, ages 25 and 24. He was held overnight by police on $10,000 bond, according to court records.

Bredickas, who is unemployed, was drinking alcohol Tuesday and, during a fit of anger, started breaking things in the house, according to a police report. He allegedly then turned his rage on the 83-year-old woman, striking her three times on the shoulder. While the woman tried to call for help, she said Bredickas destroyed the phone, according to the report. Before the phone was reportedly smashed, she made a connection to the 911 operator.

Bredickas reportedly continued his rampage outside where he poured gasoline over two of the woman's cars parked in the front yard. He was overheard talking to himself about finding matches to set the cars on fire, according to the report.

Gill ordered Bredickas to stay away from his grandmother's house if he posts bond and to have no contact with the woman. He was also ordered not to drink alcohol.
His case was scheduled to be heard again July 30.
