DELTONA, FLORIDA

A 3-year-old Deltona boy shot himself in the chest after somehow getting hold of a gun, sheriff's deputies said.

The bullet grazed the boy, who was taken by family members to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, the shooting occurred inside the boy's home on Concert Road sometime before 9:22 a.m. Tuesday. Deputies said the boy got his hands on a gun, squeezed the trigger and the weapon discharged, causing a grazing wound to the boy's chest.

The boy's mother and uncle were home at the time of the shooting, deputies said.

Deputies are interviewing family members and going through the house to find out who owns the gun, where it was kept and how the boy got access to it.

The Sheriff's Office said it learned of the shooting when the hospital called to request that an officer respond to the emergency room.

Volusia County sheriff's deputies said the boy's injury is not considered life-threatening, but he was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando for follow-up medical care.
