COLUMBUS DISPATCH

FRANKLIN COUNTY, OHIO

A reported explosion in a rest room at Pleasant View Middle School caused the evacuation of all students today, but no injuries have been reported and students are being released to their parents, a South-Western district spokeswoman said.

Two boys have been arrested, but Chief Deputy Steve Martin of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office would not give their names, ages or the charges. He said a "MacGyver bomb" — usually chemicals and metal sealed in a plastic pop bottle — was detonated in the school, but he would not give details.

Seventh- and eighth-graders were loaded onto buses after a “loud sound” about 12:30 p.m., district spokeswoman Sandy Nekoloff said. She would not  address the details of the incident. The school is at 7255 Kropp Rd. in Pleasant Township.

Franklin County deputies and Pleasant Township fire officials responded. Nekoloff said no damage was found in the school.

In a driving rain, students boarded buses for transport to Battelle-Darby Creek Metro Park nearby. They since have been taken to the Westland High School Recreation Center, where parents with ID can pick up their own children only, Nekoloff said.

Although school got out early today, she said no decision has been made about Wednesday — the last day of the school year.
