88pdx: Radical Compassion, Anyone?
Well, it is kind of hard to kiss him with the helmet on...

This photo reminds me of a recent email from our local New Age Bookstore:
New Renaissance Bookshop in Portland, OR
"Compassion is the radicalism of our time."
- The Dalai Lama
Hello, I'm Erin, staff member and your "eyes and ears" at New Renaissance Bookshop. The other day, a customer told me she had started a crusade to send kind, loving energy to policemen. As a petite, dainty woman, she said she will often joke around, asking them if they need any backup. She makes point to smile, asks how their day has been, and always looks them in the eye. This conversation really got me thinking. Like many people, I practically hyperventilate when a policeman pulls up behind me in the car. I could be doing something completely innocent, but as soon as a cop arrives, I wonder what I did wrong. Many people feel that rush of shame, fear, or even anger, and really, it doesn't serve us... or them. It must be tough for them to constantly be put in "not-so-positive" situations. On the other hand, it probably feels good for them to know their "tough love" work saves lives and brings relief. Since spiritual growth is about letting go and allowing, I'm hoping you'll join me in transforming our relationship with the police. Unlock the ball and chain of guilt and invite in compassion for yourself, policemen, and anyone needing to shift their energy with the authorities."
