LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE

Authorities say two teenage girls were struck and seriously injured by a freight train in the town of Lebanon, on the New Hampshire border.

Police believe 13-year-old Destiny Phaneuf and 14-year-old Rachael Brown were sunbathing on the railroad tracks near the water.

They say the train conductor tried to stop but couldn't because he was pulling 30 freight cars.

"I saw the conductor come out," said Christy West who lives near the tracks. "Then he was talking to Police. He was very shaken up and said he saw them at the last minute but it appeared they were sleeping on the tracks."

Phaneuf lost her leg from the knee down. Brown lost one of her feet.

The accident happened late in the morning on Wednesday. The girls were airlifted to the Maine Medical Trauma Center in Portland.

Investigators spent hours looking over the train and in the water for clues as to why the girls were on the tracks in the first place.

People who live near the accident scene say the stretch of railroad along the water is a popular spot for people to lay in the sun and go fishing. They hope this accident serves as a warning about the dangers of being on the tracks.

The train snuck up on them. How could anyone not hear or feel one coming towards you?

I feel sorry for the girls. As dumb as it was, sounds like they got this idea from other people doing the same thing. I've made some dumb mistakes when I was their age and survived. Too bad their dumb move cost them that much.

Much as I'm tempted to ridicule this one, ExCorr makes a point. This is one of those "there but for the grace of God" instances that makes me glad I didn't pay higher prices for my own youthful stupidity...

SGT217, It happens more that you think. Trains coming frorm behind you are hard to hear. A few years ago a police officer was struck and killed by a freight train while on the tracks. Ask a railroad cop about the dangers of not hearing the train coming.

det ret rpd narc: at the speed trains travel this day and age,
if tonto put his ear to the tracks to hear the train coming, he would have been beheaded and the lone ranger all by him self again.
This particular bridge is right over the water and the kids use it to jump into the lake all the time..it's going to happen again wait and see..
