DOVER, ARKANSAS

It was supposed to be the day they'd celebrate all their lives. Instead, they're fighting for those lives in hospital. And no one knows why.

In a stunning case that has police baffled, a bride and groom were gunned down at their wedding on Saturday and two other people were also wounded when an armed intruder opened fire at the ceremony. The nuptials were taking place in a popular outdoor spot in the town of Dover, Arkansas about 100 kilometres from Little Rock.

Everything was going fine until a complete stranger approached the wedding party, pulled out a 9mm pistol and without warning, began shooting at the main participants. Outraged guests chased the suspect into a nearby restaurant parking lot and held him there until police arrived and took him into custody.

His name is Patrick Duvall and so far, no one can fathom the reasons for his alleged actions. The 29-year-old "was not associated with the wedding at all," police spokesman Lt. Aaron DuVall, explains. "No one knew him."

The bride and groom were both hit and are spending their honeymoon is hospital recovering from their wounds. Two other unidentified party guests were also struck but one has since been treated and released.

Lt. DuVall, no relation to the suspect, says the alleged gunman will remain in jail at least until Wednesday, facing, among other things, four counts of first-degree battery and a felony charge of vehicle theft after the shooting.

As many as 50 people were attending the wedding, including a number of children. Fortunately, the youngsters weren't hurt. Police have absolutely no idea what the motive for the incident might be.

WIRES

Police say a man unknown to those attending an outdoor wedding yesterday in rural Pope County opened fire with a pistol, injuring four people, including the newly married bride and groom.

Police arrested 29-year-old Patrick Paul Duvall after outraged wedding-goers chased him into a Russellville restaurant parking lot. Pope County sheriff's Lieutenant Aaron DuVall says Duvall faces four felony counts of first-degree battery and a felony charge of vehicle theft after the shooting.

2 of those injured in the shooting were taken to a local hospital, while two others were flown by helicopter to Little Rock-area hospitals. DuVall says 1 of the injured has already been released.

DuVall declined to identify those injured, but said the bride and groom remain in the hospital tonight.

About 50 people, including children, attended the outdoor wedding, which was just wrapping up when Duvall approached with a 9 mm pistol.

Duvall will appear in court for a bond hearing Wednesday morning.
