A 79-year-old South Side woman set herself on fire today in what investigators are calling a suicide.
The woman’s burned body was found by her 82-year-old husband, who had been out running errands and returned to their home shortly before 11:30 a.m., to find it full of smoke.
The man tried to pull his wife from the home while neighbors called in the fire. Authorities have not released the couple’s names.
Doug Smith, a battalion chief with the Columbus Division of Fire, said it appears that the woman poured lamp oil on herself and set herself ablaze. Investigators found a container of the fluid and matches around her body, which was in a hallway of the home on Tanis Drive, just north of I-270.
The husband was taken to Mount Carmel West hospital for smoke inhalation and minor burns on his hands and arms. Arson investigators and homicide detectives are both working the case. Homicide Det. Wayne Buck said they consider this an suicide investigation.
Buck said investigators have been told that the woman has had mental health issues for several years.
