MyFoxKC.Com KANSAS CITY, MO. -- A substance abuse treatment worker was shot and killed while taking a break from his job at 63rd and Woodland.
Relatives of Napoleon Malone, 26, don't understand why anyone would kill him. The mental health technician worked nights helping addicts recover and was in college to become a counselor. Napoleon's mother, Paula Malone, said she was talking to him on his cell phone just after midnight Thursday when the shooting happened.
"I heard the car come around 59th Street while he was going up the stairs. The only thing I heard was "M-F". And then he screamed. I heard his phone hit the ground. I kept calling and calling back. Nobody would answer the phone," said Paula Malone.
Malone said it was her son's first day back at work after a week of vacation.
He took a break and walked outside the Renaissance West Substance Abuse Treatment Center to smoke a cigarette. That's when he called his mom.
"He wanted to be what do you call it, a psychologist. He wanted to work with these people. This is what he gets," said Malone.
The addiction recovery director at the center called Malone a good employee who had been working overnights for a couple of years. She said both clients and staffers at the center are upset over his murder.
Kay Murphy-Collins said, "He was a really well liked member of our staff team. Clients liked him. The staff liked him. He had a smile for everybody. He's just really a great guy who'll be sorely missed."
Police said three men wearing hooded jackets approached Malone outside the center and after some words were exchanged, the suspects opened fire.
Paula Malone said she won't rest until there's justice for her son. Detectives said anyone with information about the shooting should call the TIPS Hotline, 474-TIPS.
Leaders at Renaissance West said there's never been a violent crime outside their treatment center. The center is re-evaluating security for 30 clients who live at that location.
