Call for rental car, get a rescue

Stickers will have to be pasted into 300,000 phone books that mistakenly send anyone looking to rent a car to the search-and-rescue centre in Halifax.

In the forthcoming directory for Halifax, the 1-800 number listed for National Car Rental is actually the number for the centre that sends ships and aircraft to rescue sailors.

One day last month, the centre fielded about five calls for car rentals.

The same 1-800 number is listed online on the Canada 411 site. It was fixed on the website, but the federal government lauched a civil lawsuit against Yellow Pages Group, the company that publishes the phone book.

"From the point of view of my client, it was an issue of public safety that interfered with their telephone lines, can cause unacceptable delay and that delay can cause risk," said Michael Donovan, a lawyer for the federal government.

The lawsuit was dropped after Yellow Pages agreed to place a sticker over the incorrect listing in all 300,000 copies of the directory.

"We did indeed correct the mistake," Annie Marsolais, spokeswoman for Yellow Pages Group, said Thursday.

Marsolais said the phone books will be distributed this month as planned.
