ORLANDO

A recent survey that found some Florida teens believe drinking a cap of bleach will prevent HIV and a shot of Mountain Dew will stop pregnancy has prompted lawmakers to push for an overhaul of sex education in the state.

The survey showed that Florida teens also believe that smoking marijuana will prevent a person from getting pregnant.

State lawmakers said the myths are spreading because of Florida's abstinence-only sex education, Local 6 reported.

They are proposing a bill that would require a more comprehensive approach, the report said.

It would still require teaching abstinence but students would also learn about condoms and other methods of birth control and disease prevention.

The bill just passed its first vote in a committee, Local 6 reported.

If you drink bleach and smoke weed instead of having sex, you will not get pregnant. (should have applied for a grant before I released this fact)

As a youth, SGT217, I was told that an aspirin tablet squeezed firmly between
a girls knees could prevent all sorts of sex related problems.

smilies/cheesy.gif @ pros!!! I was told to do just that growing up!!

For me - the sad part about this is that I live in Orlando and in just under a year I will be seeking a LE job here - I'm not even looking forward to dealing with the youth of Orlando! I am however curious to find out just exactly what parents have done to alter the brains of most of our youths today!

the article says "some" teens. I wonder just who they interviewed. Sounds to me more like someone's survey intent on showing abstinence education doesn't work. Its obvious that the education portion of it didn't work because abstinence education cuuriculum is a bit more than just saying "don't" but again the liberal media is intent on destroying anything that would also be moral by nature. It can honestly be said that anyone that follows abstinence teaching will not get pregnant and that most all other methods except castration (male or female)do fail. Read the stats some time and see just how ineffective condoms really are but hey lets give them to 6th graders out east! yeah that's responsible.

Uhm... read the stats sometime, condoms, worn/used properly do work. Abstinance only sex education does not. The reason is simple, a class about not having sex will not change the views/morals/etc that your parents brought you up with and it will not give you the tools to have safer (nothing safe about it) sex if you're the type of person that is going to do it.

Abstinance only preaches to those who already agree and is ignored by the rest. The fact is, that high-school and ealier kids are having sex and unless you teach them facts about sex and about contraception, they're going to have sex with no protection at all. Preaching to them about abstinance, however rightous, won't change that.
