Police canvassed a neighborhood Friday where the pregnant girlfriend of former Bears player Shaun Gayle was shot and killed. They are looking for leads in the murder of Rhoni Reuter.

Police were called to the Deerfield condo complex after a neighbor heard screaming and gunfire Thursday morning. They found Reuter dead from multiple gunshot wounds inside her home.

The 42-year old was about seven months pregnant. The unborn child was killed. Police say Gayle was the unborn child's father.

The former Bears safety went to the Deerfield police station after hearing about the shooting. He talked with investigators with his attorney present. Police say Gayle is not a suspect.

"No suspect information is available at this time. Lake County Major Task Force is assisting on this investigation and following leads as they develop," said Chief John Sliozis, Deerfield Police Department.

Several detectives took a bag of evidence outside of the apartment where Reuter was shot to death early Thursday morning. They also took a bag of evidence out of Gayle's apartment in the Wicker Park neighborhood in Chicago.

They say, though, that Gayle has been cooperating throughout this investigation and they too don't label him a suspect.

According to the Chicago Tribune and court documents, Reuter was being harassed by Gayle's ex-girlfriend, Monkia Kurowska, 29. Deerfield Police said they have been able to track down that woman and, as of right now, they are not labeling her a suspect.

According to court documents, the two dated for about six months, but the relationship ended in May of 2006.

There was tension between Shaun Gayle and Kurowska, and in recent days that tension reportedly escalated.

Gayle went to court and requested a restraining order against her. He accused her of sending out emails and letters that harassed female friends of his. And in the last day or so, an attorney for Gayle went back to court and asked that this woman be held in contempt because he accused her of once again threatening female friends of Gayle's, including the murder victim.

She told the Tribune, "I have nothing to hide." She denies being behind those threatening letters and made a point of saying that she is now married and expecting a child.

Gayle's lawyer said she sent harassing emails to a charity board Gayle worked with, and he claims she would bang on the windows of his townhouse and lurk there late at night. He said in a statement to the court, "These are jeopardizing my personal and professional relationships." Court documents quote Gayle as saying Kurowska was on a "campaign of harassment against me. I have been nervous and have been unable to sleep properly."

Investigators say they expect to be working on the case throughout the weekend, and an arrest, they say, is not imminent.

Gayle released a statement Friday saying, "I am extremely devastated by the loss of Rhoni and our unborn child. She was a kind, loving and beautiful woman. During this difficult time, I would like to thank all of the people who have expressed their kindness and support. I will continue to cooperate to the police in any way possible in finding who committed this horrific crime. I ask the media to respect my privacy and the privacy of Rhoni's family white we mourn our loss."

When Gayle heard about his girlfriend's death, he was sitting in a barber's chair, getting his haircut Thursday morning, according to one of his attorneys. He learned of the death from a reporter.

"I'm sorry and deeply sad about what happened to his girlfriend. I know shaun personally and he's a great guy," said William "Refrigerator" Perry.

While Gayle and his attorney have refused to comment about the murder investigation, those at the gym where Reuter regularly worked out say she was a great lady.

"She was just a very caring, energetic woman who loved life, was really looking forward to her new experience with her baby and the future of her baby," said Rob Stahl, trainer.

Police say they have no suspects in custody and have made no arrests.

"I heard screams and a couple of bangs and crashes," said Gayle Rubin, victim's neighbor.

The shooting sparked a heavy police response in the neighborhood. Officers from several communities canvassed the area and stopped several vehicles in their search for a possible suspect.

"They stopped me because they said there was a murder that was across the tracks. It's new to me. I can't believe it," said Jasmine Dunlap, Deerfield Resident.

"It is quite shocking in this neighborhood. I have never had anything like this, an incident like this at all. It is pretty scary because our kids here just run around," said Rose Delrosario, victim's neighbor.

The baby girl was to be her first, the culmination of a longtime relationship with former Bear Shaun Gayle.

Rhoni Reuter, 42, a friend and girlfriend of Gayle's for 18 years, talked excitedly about the expected December birth at a family reunion in her hometown of Potosi, Wis., in August.

"She was very excited about having this child," said Julie Ames, 42, a childhood friend.

But instead of planning for the birth, Reuter's family members Friday were planning her funeral after she was shot several times and killed Thursday in her Deerfield condominium.

Police released little new information on the case Friday, saying they had no suspects but were working leads, talking to acquaintances of Reuter's and looking for more clues at the woman's home.

"I am extremely devastated by the loss of Rhoni and our unborn child," Gayle said in a statement released Friday by his attorneys. "She was a kind, loving and beautiful woman. . . . I will continue to cooperate with the police in any way possible in finding who committed this horrific crime."

Deerfield police Deputy Chief Tom Keane reiterated earlier statements Friday afternoon that Gayle is not a suspect and he has been cooperating. Gayle voluntarily went to Deerfield police Thursday night to tell them of his relationship with Reuter, and he left the station freely several hours later.

On Friday, Gayle's attorney, Tracy Rizzo, said police have not asked to talk to him again, but he has been available if needed.

Police went to his home in the Wicker Park neighborhood earlier Thursday and left with several containers, though authorities have not said what they took.

Police discovered Reuter's body in her third-floor residence in the Deerfield Crossing complex in the 400 block of Elm Street on Thursday morning. Police said there was no sign of forced entry into Reuter's condominium, and it appeared that nothing had been stolen. Police did not find the gun used in her killing, Keane said.

Ames said Reuter met Gayle when she was in her mid-20s and the two dated for about 18 years.

"They did a lot of traveling together," Ames said. "She was a free spirit."

Mike Singletary, former Bear linebacker and now a coach with the San Francisco 49ers, said that he spoke to Gayle on Thursday night and Gayle was still trying to make sense of the killing.

"They've been friends for a long time," Singletary said, describing Gayle as a close friend.

Authorities Friday said they also have spoken with an ex-girlfriend of Gayle's, Monika Kurowska, whom Gayle alleged in court papers was harassing him and Reuter. Police said she was "very cooperative and is not a suspect."

In court records, Gayle said Reuter received a "harassing anonymous letter" from the woman in May 2006, and other friends and a charity he worked for received more harassing letters about him in November, he alleged. Gayle had an order of protection against the woman until 2009.

His attorney filed a new complaint against Kurowska on Thursday morning alleging that Kurowska had recently sent new harassing letters to a charity that Gayle was helping.

But in a telephone interview Thursday, Kurowska denied harassing Gayle or his friends. Ames said Reuter, whom she described as "slim and beautiful," had been a stellar student and an athlete at Potosi High School, where she graduated in 1983. She was a cheerleader, a track star, a member of the school yearbook committee and an honor roll student, Ames said.

Reuter was the middle of three children, with an older and a younger brother, Ames said. Reuter's father, Douglas, is retired from John Deere; her mother, Landa, still works part-time in the high school kitchen.

After graduation, Reuter worked for a while in Dubuque, Iowa, and held a job in retail before moving to Deerfield, Ames said. Reuter's last job was with U.S. Foodservice in Rosemont where she worked for 7 years, according to a company spokeswoman.

Since leaving the Bears in 1995, Gayle has been involved in several ventures, including real estate deals and a radio commentary career that expanded into television. Recently, he has been working for British Sky Sports—the leading sports channel company in the United Kingdom—doing NFL commentary, and continues to be heard locally on WCKG-FM 105.9.

Gayle also has put together a large number of sports marketing promotions, many of them involving former Bears players, and wrote a popular series of children's picture books that emphasized moral values. He also became a $4 million investor in the Emerald Casino.

Gayle has cultivated political connections and been active in charitable causes, some of them related to his sports marketing ventures. Several of his charitable activities have centered on children, and he briefly started a preschool in 1988.

Recently, he participated in a motorcycle ride that raised money for the Chicago Abused Women Coalition.
