Indianapolis Star Patoka -- The State Police on Friday were investigating the death of a newborn whose body was found inside a cardboard box in the basement of a Southern Indiana house. Detectives found the body Thursday evening while searching the home after medical staff at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes reported that a 21-year-old woman complaining of abdominal pain had recently given birth, police said. The woman went Wednesday to the hospital, where she was still being treated Friday, police said. The baby's body was found at her home in the town of Patoka, about 30 miles north of Evansville. An autopsy of the baby was conducted Friday, but the Gibson County coroner did not immediately rule on the cause of death, and toxicology test results were not completed. State Police Sgt. Todd Ringle said detectives had not been able to talk with the woman by Friday night because of her medical condition.
