Federal authorities say a man was removed from a cross-country flight that was diverted to Denver International Airport because he grabbed a flight attendant.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says 59-year-old Frederick W. Murphy of New Jersey was on Continental Flight 17 from Newark to Los Angeles when he became upset when the flight attendants refused to give him alcohol.

When the flight landed in Denver, Murphy was taken off the plane and arrested.

Witnesses on the flight say Murphy appeared intoxicated when he boarded the flight and later grabbed a flight attendant in a hug-type style and inappropriately touched her.

According to the police affidavit, Murphy later told the flight attendants, "If I don't get a glass of wine, you're going to have to kill me."

The affidavit shows he made aggressive moves toward a flight attendant and claimed at one point he had a gun. When he made an aggressive move toward the cockpit and then the outside door, a passenger had to physically restrain Murphy and take him back to his seat.

Murphy made his initial court appearance on Friday and was released on bond. If convicted he could get up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.
