Pig Leads Police On Chase

Greer, South Carolina

An unusual suspect led officers on a wild chase through the streets of Greer.  The subject?  A 400 pound pig who's size and speed made for a difficult capture.

Emory Gault with Greer Animal Control says the pig was first spotted in the Starcrest subdivision.  Officers responded but lost sight of the huge hog.  It was sighted again on Tuesday.  Gault said it crossed busy Wade Hampton Blvd. twice, "If you hit a 400 pound hog in the road, the contour of it's body, it's going to flip you and hurt someone."  The pig managed to elude both cars and around a dozen people trying to chase and catch it, "Don't let the size fool you.  She's fast," Gault said.

Gault and others were finally able to corner the pig in another residential neighborhood.  Gault used what's called "control sticks" to try and keep the pig in place until it could be transported, "She drug us around like rubber balls.  Took me one way and the other guy the other way.  We were both trying to keep her from biting us."  Gault was finally able to load the pig into a trailer.  The hog, named "Shamrock" in honor of St. Patrick's Day, now sits in it's own pen while officers try to figure out where she came from.

This is the second pig Gault has had to rescue in the last four months.  Right before Christmas, officers rescued a smaller pig they named "Noel".  Noel is at Mini-Miracle Farm on Highway 290 and doing well.  Gault says if anyone knows where Shamrock came from, or would be interested in finding her a home, they should call Greer Animal Control at 848-5363.
