keloland.com Sioux Falls, South Dakota Police are often quick getting to the scene of a crime, but two Sioux Falls officers were right there early Tuesday morning, as a man tried to rob a convenience store.
Talk about the right place at the right time; two officers working the graveyard shift stopped at the Get 'N Go on South Marion Road for a short break.
"Heard some obscenities, turned around and looked, saw the man had a knife and was holding up the place," said Sioux Falls police chief Doug Barthel.
Twenty-four-year-old Robert Davis walked right in as the officers were sitting down for a cup of coffee, a bold move, considering the policemen weren't hiding or working undercover.
"Both officers were in uniform, they had two marked squad cars in the parking lot," Barthel said.
Davis was able to get some money from the cash register, then took off running when the officers drew their weapons.
They quickly caught up with him, arrested him, and charged him with robbery, resisting arrest, fleeing police, and threatening police.
"He said that as soon as he gets out of jail, he would kill them," said Barthel.
Davis refused to take a breath test, but officers could smell alcohol on his breath when they arrested him. Police say this is something they've never seen before.
"To actually have someone come in while police officers are there, in full uniform with two squad cars in the parking lot is quite amazing.
And they say it's lucky he didn't try to fight back, which would have forced them to use their weapons.
Chief Barthel says because the main witnesses in this case are police officers, prosecuting Davis shouldn't be too difficult.
