A woman told Melbourne police she met a man on New Year's Eve who held her captive in her own house for four days. The woman said neither she nor her young son could escape.

The 33-year-old registered sex offender was arrested late Monday night for allegedly holding the woman against her will. Jonathan Aaron Burdette of Cocoa Beach was arrested after the female victim was able to secretly text a friend, saying she was being held against her will by Burdette.

Police say the sex offender met the woman at a discount store in Cocoa on New Years Eve, asked to make her dinner on New Year's Day and then wouldn't leave her apartment.

"It's basically my understanding she was not able to leave on her own free will," Commander Ron Bell of the Melbourne Police Department said.

For four days, police say, Burdette held the woman against her will inside her own home. Police are not identifying her because she is the victim of a sex crime. Police say he raped her and made the single mother do humiliating non-sexual acts in front of her young son.

"It's real bizarre what this individual had the victim do in front of her son," Bell said.

The woman told police he intimidated her and wouldn't let her leave her own home. She was able to send cryptic text messages to a friend and then let the friend know Burdette was taking her to a restaurant.

When police arrived at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant on Monday night, the woman made eye contact with the officer. They were able to get the woman away from Burdette and arrest him.

"The friend finally figured out that something was terribly wrong and the victim got law enforcement involved," he said.

Early Tuesday morning, Melbourne police took Burdette to the Brevard County jail, where he is being held on no bond. He was charged with a domestic violence, sexual battery, false imprisonment and violation of sex offender registration requirements.
