Pittsburgh police say a mother of triplets was away playing bingo when the toddlers fell down the steps in their home, badly injuring one of the three little girls.

Police aren't identifying the 2-year-olds hurt in Sunday night's incident, but say one was in respiratory failure when medics arrived and remained in critical condition Monday at UPMC Children's Hospital.

Police say the triplets were being watched by their mother's boyfriend, who told police the toddlers followed him up the flight of 14 steps. The man told police the triplets were wearing toy high-heeled shoes when one of them fell, knocking the other two down the steps, too.

No charges have been filed, but police are continuing to investigate.
