A webcam monitoring nine Northumbria Police puppies has attracted more than 170,000 hits from across the world.

The German shepherd dogs were born on 15 October to five-year-old police dog Heidi who is retiring after providing the force with three litters.

The five dogs and four bitches are now being weaned and have started barking.

The webcam, based at Durham Police's kennels, has been viewed by people as far afield as North America and Germany.

The puppies' father Jack, aged three, is one of the largest and tallest dogs in the force, weighing 41kg.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "The puppies have attracted 177,620 hits and people have viewed the webcam in countries like the United States, Canada and Germany."

The webcam operates whenever the kennels are staffed.
