WIRES

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO

Police said a 21-year-old man wounded in a drive-by shooting Wednesday identified himself as Osvaldo Martinez Pizarro, a shortstop signed by baseball's Florida Marlins three years ago.

Marlins spokesman Matt Roebuck said the club could not confirm their player was the victim.

"We're still checking on the details," he said.

Police spokeswoman Maria Rivera said the man was attacked as he drove through the city of Carolina, just east of the Caribbean island's capital, San Juan.

Rivera said Martinez was taken to the hospital for surgery. Police officer Wanda Abdalah said later that the victim was recuperating from surgery and is stable.

Martinez was signed by the Marlins in 2006 and plays for the Jupiter. Hammerheads minor league team. He played in 130 games this season, batting .254 with 45 RBIs.

He also plays for the Criollos de Caguas in Puerto Rico.

This article fails to show that as of Thu (Oct 1) there have been 661 murders this year. That is 57 more than in 2008.

I feel they should change the name from "Enchanted Island" to "Scary Island"
