A motorist with a red light but no police authority attempted a traffic stop Monday night until he realized the driver he pulled over was Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover.

Daniel Niederhelman, 21, of the 6500 block of Lexington Avenue in Shreveport, was arrested and charged with one count of false personation of a peace officer, Shreveport Police Cpl. Bill Goodin said.

Police believe Niederhelman, who is not a commissioned officer and was driving a private vehicle, was using the emergency light to maneuver through traffic. Police also seized the in-dash emergency light and a handgun from Niederhelman's holster.

"It was surreal," Glover said after arriving about an hour late at a master plan visioning forum at Captain Shreve High School.

Glover said he was headed down East 70th Street toward the Shreveport school when a Chevrolet Monte Carlo with a red light flashing came up behind him as if to pull him over. Glover did so on a side street of Broadmoor Terrace. Once the man realized the driver was Glover, the mayor said, he got back in his car and drove away.

Glover was able to follow the vehicle at a distance as they headed north through several neighborhoods eventually ending up in Highland. In the meantime, Glover called police. When the driver arrived at a building in the 800 block of Jordan, so did officers.

At that point, Glover said the driver identified himself as a volunteer firefighter in Red River Parish. Glover said his response was, "Where is the fire in southeast Caddo Parish?"

The incident happened at about 6:20 p.m. in the 2400 block of East 70th Street. Police say Niederhelman works for a security company.

USA TODAY

SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA

Bilde Police say a Louisiana motorist impersonating an officer used a flashing red light to pull over a car for an apparent traffic stop until he realized that the driver was the mayor of the city, The Shreveport Times reports.

When the phony cop sped off, Mayor Cedric Glover followed and called police, who arrested 21-year-old Daniel Niederhelman on a charge of impersonating a peace officer.

Niederhelman told the real officers that he was a volunteer fireman in a neighboring parish. Police, in turn, seized his little red light and a handgun from his holster, the paper says.

Authorities say Niederhelman works for a private security company, but wasn’t authorized to use the light.
