KCRA-TV SACRAMENTO, CA Three off-duty police officers who went to Haggin Oaks Golf Course to hit some golf balls after work ended up catching a burglary suspect, police said. The trio -- Officers Chris Shippen, Luis Canela and Todd Culp -- detained supsect Nicholas Heiser, 25. The officers had just finished the swing shift and were at the range when they spotted an apparent crime in progress shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Officer Konrad von Schoech said. The course driving range, located at 3645 Fulton Ave., operates 24 hours a day. The officials bought a bucket of golf balls and were standing next to the pay kiosk when a burglar alarm rang from the nearby Morton Golf Player Performance Studio and Test Center, which is used by the golf course to study and analyze players' swings and overall performance. The building houses golf clubs, video equipment, computers and other electronics. The officers saw Heiser running out of the building with a large object in his hands, von Schoech said. Officers confirmed with the kiosk attendant that no one was supposed to be in the building. Believing that a burglary had just taken place, the officers ran after Heiser. As they pursued him, the officers identified themselves as off-duty police, von Schoech said. After a short foot pursuit, the officers caught up with Heiser and detained him. On-duty officers responded to take Heiser to jail. Police said Heiser allegedly broke into the building by smashing a window. He is accused of taking a video recorder and tripod stand. Heiser was booked into jail on suspicion of burglary and violation of probation charges.
